“I was by myself for a pretty long time. I needed to do that. I think everyone that I know has wanted to do that or needed to do that at some point. I think when you spend enough time when it’s quiet around you and you don’t open your mouth for three or four days, there’s parts of your brain that can kind of rest. I think when we’re out in the world and we have to talk to people, we edit ourselves. You know, we have to like, act a little bit. As honest as we may be as humans, when we’re out here, we’re all kind of wearing mirrors on our faces. You know, constantly reacting to how to react to the people around you. And I think when you’re alone for a long enough time, you can feel a lot more peace.”

They blow bubbles and in each one of those bubbles is an egg and they float the egg up to the surface. They keep this whole heavy nest of eggs floating, and they’re constantly repairing it. It’s as if they live in both elements. That’s something that we have to do, too, in our own lives—keep it all afloat. It’s possible to take that as a personal metaphor and then multiply it to a people, a race, a sex, a time. If we can keep this thing going long enough, if we can survive and teach what we know, we’ll make it. But the question is a matter of the survival and the teaching.”

Is it fair to call this a book trailer when it clearly has a bigger budget than most? Maybe it’s more kin to a commercial. Anyway, Fred Armisen’s version of Penny Marshall hawking her new memoir MY MOTHER WAS NUTS is a good for a few laughs.

Only a writer who’s pitched for a living could create this book trailer. Anyone who’s tried to sell a piecing of writing (from essays to memoirs to screenplays) will find this hilarious—and a little close to home. It’s the book trailer for WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? by Maria Semple (who wrote for Arrested Development). She pokes fun at herself, Seattle and a host of other (worthy) topics. I’ve been waiting to read this (epistolary) novel because it sends up Seattle, where I lived for 13 years, and now that I’ve seen this trailer, it’s moved to the top of my list.
